Quick action by Nigerian soldiers prevented what could have been a catastrophic incident on Monday when they safely removed a large metal object suspected to be an unexploded bomb from the premises of the United Evangelical Church (UEC) in Ehere/Umuola, Ogbor Hill, Aba.
The discovery occurred during ongoing fence reconstruction work at the church parsonage, when workers unearthed the suspicious device buried in the ground. Church members and the parish priest promptly alerted a nearby military unit rather than attempting to handle the object themselves.
Soldiers responded swiftly, cordoning off the area to ensure public safety before carefully evacuating the suspected explosive without incident. Eyewitnesses described the scene as tense but orderly, with the military’s professional handling preventing any panic or harm.
Local residents, traders, and sympathizers gathered at the site expressed immense relief and gratitude, noting that the busy Ogbor Hill location — frequently filled with worshippers, passersby, and vendors — could have resulted in massive casualties and widespread property damage had the device detonated. Many estimated that more than 100 lives, along with surrounding structures, were potentially spared.
A senior military officer confirmed the operation and revealed that Army headquarters has now taken over the investigation to determine the object’s exact nature, origin, and how it came to be buried at the church site.
No injuries were reported, and normal activities in the vicinity have since resumed under close monitoring. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious items or activities immediately to security agencies.
This narrow escape underscores the critical role of prompt reporting and rapid military response in averting disasters in densely populated areas. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
