Preparations are complete for Senator Nenadi Usman to officially take over the Labour Party (LP) National Secretariat, a move that would make her Nigeria’s first female national chairman of a major political party.
The secretariat, located in the Utako District of Abuja, had been controlled by the Julius Abure-led faction until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) formally recognised Usman and her team as the party’s legitimate leadership.
A large banner bearing the portraits of Senator Usman and the acting National Secretary, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, has now been hoisted at the building, signalling the start of a new era in the opposition party. Further details of the transition are expected shortly.
This development follows a Federal High Court ruling that affirmed the Usman-led interim leadership.
