Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has vowed that his administration will not repeat what he described as the “costly errors” of the past government, particularly its failure to swear in three judges duly cleared by the National Judicial Council (NJC).
The governor made the declaration while receiving the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Benin Branch, and members of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the forthcoming NBA National Executive Committee (NEC) Meeting scheduled to hold in Edo State.
Describing the former administration’s refusal to swear in the judges as a “slap on the face of the judiciary” and “a grave injustice to the State’s justice system,” Okpebholo reaffirmed his government’s resolve to restore integrity, fairness, and independence to the judiciary.
“We are in government to make a real difference, a visible difference that Edo people can feel,” the Governor said. “Our government will not repeat the errors of the past. The former administration’s decision to deny those judges their rightful swearing-in, despite NJC clearance, was a great disservice to justice.”
Governor Okpebholo revealed that he had personally investigated the matter before assuming office and found no justification for the delay.
“I discovered that these judges excelled in their qualifying examinations and had no blemish whatsoever. Justice delayed is justice denied, and I could not allow such an injustice to persist,” he added.
He emphasized that his decision to swear in the judges was aimed at “rewriting the wrongs of the past and restoring confidence in the judiciary.”
Commending the NBA for its steadfast commitment to justice and good governance, Okpebholo announced plans to provide operational vehicles for the association to enhance its statewide engagements.
“My administration will continue to support the NBA to perform its duties effectively. We are determined to build a justice system that works for every Edo citizen,” the Governor said.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the NBA, Benin Branch, Barr. Idemudia Iredia Osifo, applauded the Governor for his bold reforms and decisive leadership, especially the prompt swearing-in of the long-delayed judges and the restoration of the Customary Court of Appeal.
“Your Excellency, your decision demonstrates courage and respect for the rule of law,” Osifo said. “We also commend your focus on security. Insecurity is a global concern, and you have shown the will to make Edo safer for its people.”
Osifo further disclosed that the NBA would host a Land Administration Seminar on November 5, 2025, to examine the Governor’s powers under the Land Use Act and offer policy recommendations to the state government.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, and other top government officials.
