“Tyla wins her second Grammy for Best African Music Performance with ‘Push 2 Start,’ topping Burna Boy, Davido, Ayra Starr, and others at the 2026 awards.”

South African sensation Tyla has claimed her second Grammy Award, triumphing in the Best African Music Performance category at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards on February 1, 2026.

The 24-year-old star secured the win for her infectious track “Push 2 Start”, edging out a stacked field of nominees that included heavyweights from across the continent. Among the competitors were Nigeria’s Burna Boy with “Love,” Davido featuring Omah Lay on “With You,” Ayra Starr and Wizkid‘s collaboration “Gimme Dat,” and Uganda’s Eddy Kenzo alongside Mehran Matin for “Hope & Love.”

Tyla’s victory marks a historic back-to-back achievement in the category, following her groundbreaking win in 2024 for the global smash “Water,” which made her the inaugural recipient of the award when it was introduced to celebrate African musical excellence.

The win underscores Tyla’s rapid ascent on the international stage, blending Amapiano roots with pop sensibilities to capture audiences worldwide. Her success highlights South Africa’s expanding influence in global music, as Amapiano and other African genres continue to surge in popularity on playlists from Los Angeles to London.

For Nigeria’s Afrobeats giants, the night brought disappointment. Despite strong showings in nominations—including Burna Boy’s additional nod in the Best Global Music Album category for “No Sign of Weakness”—no Nigerian artist took home a trophy this year. Burna Boy’s album ultimately lost to the Brazilian legends Caetano Veloso and Maria Bethânia for their live project “Caetano e Bethânia Ao Vivo.”

The Best African Music Performance category, now in its third year, reflects the growing mainstream embrace of African sounds. With fierce competition among the continent’s top talents, Tyla’s repeat win signals her consistency and broad appeal, while pointing to an exciting, increasingly competitive future for African music on the global awards circuit.
